New Car Financing: 2013 Chevy Cruze Introduces Safer “Smart” Airbags

When looking for a new or used car, the price, features, and comfort are all taken into consideration, but at the end of the day, I want to know that the car I am buying will keep me safe.

With that in mind, GM has announced that the 2013 Chevrolet Cruze will come with a “smart” airbag as a standard feature. Typical airbags can actually cause injury to the driver if they are not seated the proper distance from the front airbag, but these new airbags use a flexible vent so that the driver’s momentum will push the air out.

GM General Director of Vehicle Safety Gay Kent has praised the new airbag as a “smart way to manage crash forces,” and GM is marketing it as an “industry first” in safety technology.

When it comes to airbag injuries, it is important to remember that airbags are most effective when passengers are wearing their seat belts. The large majority of airbag injuries occur when the driver or passenger was not wearing a seat belt, and even with the new technology in Chevy’s airbag system, it will not work properly if seat belts are not worn.

“Crash Course” Class Makes Better Teen Drivers

At the BSR Accident Avoidance course, teens learn to stay accident free by testing their nerves and reaction times behind the wheel.

The “crash course” driving class is quickly gaining popularity with teens and parents alike. Through practical behind-the-wheel instruction, teens learn to stay calm in stressful scenarios like keeping control in bad weather or if the car leaves the road. They test their reflexes and nerves in a controlled environment so that when they are in that situation, they will be less likely to get in an accident. Driving instructor Don Ruschman explained, “In those few seconds, an untrained driver will most often rely on their instincts. The problem is that in driving under stress, our instincts are almost always wrong.”

Some critics of the class claim that the teaching methods will make teens more reckless, but for the most part, the course has been well-received. Even teens that would typically drag their feet with a traditional drivers ed course are signing up because of the cool factor involved. Personally, I see no downside to the course. Motor vehicle accidents are still the leading cause of death amongst teens, and newly licensed drivers are some of the highest risk drivers on the road. If it saves lives and produces better teen drivers, then I think it is something that everyone can get behind.

Stay Safe Driving on Fourth of July

The Fourth of July is next week, and with it comes beer, barbeques, and fireworks. Unfortunately, the Fourth of July is also notorious for car accidents, particularly with young drivers. There is no way to guarantee a safe drive on Fourth of July just like there’s no way to guarantee safety on any other day of the year, but by practicing common sense when driving, many accidents can be avoided.

Buckle Up: Yes, it’s been said time and time again, but when you’re heading out to a cook-out or to see the fireworks, it can be easy to pile too many people into a car. People end up sitting on each other’s laps, and not everyone has a seatbelt. If your group plans on driving anywhere else during the day, make sure that there are enough seats for everyone and enough designated drivers for multiple cars.

Don’t Drink and Drive: Don’t do it. Seriously, just don’t. I don’t know how to be clearer about this point. Don’t drink and drive. End of story.

…or Text…or Anything Else: Moms and Dads always say, “It’s not that I don’t trust you, it’s that I don’t trust everyone else,” and there is some truth to this saying. You might be able to drive competently while talking on your phone or texting when the traffic around you is calm, but the true test is whether you can quickly respond to an emergency while talking on the phone or texting. Can you text and still drive in a straight line? Maybe. Can you text and have the proper response time when the car in front of you suddenly stops? No. When you drive, focus solely on driving. Everything else can wait until you are out of the car.
