Edmunds’ Picks for Best Used Vehicles of 2013

While a lot of automotive press is dedicated to the newest models or what lies ahead for automotive brands, Edmunds took a break this week to compile their list of the best used cars of 2013.

There are a lot of good reasons to buy a used car. For one, buyers can end up saving a lot of money and still get a quality car. Second, the value of a new car will depreciate very quickly, so if the buyer plans on trading it in sometime in the next few years, they might be unpleasantly surprised when they go for a trade-in depending on the model. Dodge Announces 2013 Dart Special Edition, Rallye Appearance Packages

President and CEO of Dodge Tim Kuniskis has announced that the 2013 Dodge Dart will be offering new special edition packages based on customer’s favorite features.

The Special Edition and Rallye Appearance Package will be available for the SXT and Limited Models and will range in cost from $395 to $1,810, and features will include power sunroofs, heated seats, remote start, Uconnect Voice Command, and more.

The base model starts at around $15,995, and Dodge has used a variety of ways to make the car more affordable and appealing to young people. Earlier this year, Dodge announced that car shoppers short on funds could crowd source the cost of the Dart, asking for people to pledge money in lieu of a gift for a birthday or high school graduation. With the announcement of these new special edition packages, Dodge is hoping to give the Dart a sales boost going into the summer and remind compact car shoppers that the Dart is a solid and affordable option.

Chrysler Design Chief Teases Future Minivan

Chrysler has yet to announce the future for their minivan and whether it will be released as a Chrysler Town & Country or a Dodge Caravan for the 2015 model, but Chrysler design chief Ralph Gilles has made it clear that this will be a car for the new-age mom.

“I think the new generation is ‘supermom,’” Giles said in a recent interview. “I think consumers see minivans as a tool to be the ultimate mother, so we’re designing it for that.” Giles also pointed out that Chrysler has a large number of female engineers and designers working on the new minivan and says that their own “real-life experiences” have influenced the vehicle’s features and design.

The 2013 Chrysler Town & Country starts at around $30,000 and comes with standard DVD player and leather trim as well as Stow ‘n Go seating. By comparison, Dodge can boast that the Caravan is the best-selling and most awarded minivan ever with a starting price around $19,990.

Consumer Reports: Top 10 Cars We Would Buy Again

Repeat business and brand loyalty is extremely important in any industry, but it is especially important in the auto industry. Bad customer feedback can sink a model and cost an automaker greatly. Fortunately, there are plenty of vehicles on the market today that have repeat business, and Consumer Reports has compiled the top 10 cars that have customers coming back for more.

According to Consumer Reports, consumers said they would be most likely to buy the following cars again:

10/9. Toyota Camry hybrid and Ford Mustang V-8 (87 percent)
8/7. Dodge Charger V-8 and Audi A-6 (88 percent)
6. Lexus GS (89 percent)
5/4. Dodge Challenger V-8 and Audi A7 (90 percent)
3/2. Porsche 911 and Chevrolet Corvette (91 percent)
1. Chevrolet Volt (92 percent)

With only a 5 point range between tenth and first place, competition was tough this year. There was a tie for ninth, seventh, fourth, and second places. All of these automakers should be proud of these numbers, especially that the top 5 were at 90 percent or above. These are customer satisfaction stats that every company dreams of and rarely achieve, so consumers that are in the market for a new car should consider taking at least one of these 10 vehicles for a test drive.

Auto Loan: January Auto Sales Surpass Expectations

We predicted it. With reports of lower interest rates and more flexible loan lengths, we predicted that January would be a good month for the auto industry, even coming off of such a strong year.

As it turned out, January was a great month.

January is done and the numbers are coming in, and U.S. auto sales were up 14 percent. It is much better than analysts were predicting, and these gains weren’t limited to one type or model of vehicle. Large pickups, small cars, and crossovers alike all saw increased sales in January.

Among the individual automakers, Toyota had a 27 percent increase. Ford’s U.S. sales had a 22 percent increase. GM had a 47 percent increase on Cadillac, and sales for their full-sized pickups increased 32 percent. Meanwhile, Chrysler’s car sales went up 50 percent with strong showings by the Dodge Avenger, Dodge Dart, and Fiat 500 line.

AOL Autos Announces Technology of the Year Award Winner

This year, AOL Autos gave out its first Technology of the Year Award, and the Chrysler Uconnect was victorious in a very competitive field of “connective” technology.

The other five finalists for the award included the MyFord Mobile app, the Audi connect with Google Maps, Cadillac’s CUE system, Honda’s LaneWatch, and Nissan’s Tire Pressure Alert and Refill System. These systems improved driver safety, made navigational systems more user-friendly, and allowed drivers to access the internet on the go.

Chrysler’s Uconnect won over both the judges and AOL Auto readers alike. AOL Autos Editor-in-Chief David Kiley praised the system, saying, “It was easy to use, it was intuitive. It worked perfectly with our phones. The voice control worked just right, and it had enough new features to qualify it as new among our nominees for 2012. Technology that works the way it’s supposed to? Well, that could be the new definition of state-of-the-art.”

The new Chrysler Uconnect is available in the 2013 Ram 1500 and Dodge Viper, and it will soon be available in all new Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, and Ram models.

Car Loan: 2013 Dodge Charger Daytona Debuts at LA Auto Show

Later this week, the LA Auto Show will be kicking off with celebrity appearances, special events, and vehicle debuts. Another popular vehicle has been added to the line-up of show debuts, and fans of the “winged warrior” will be excited to see the 2013 Dodge Charger Daytona at the show.

In a press release from Dodge, Reid Bigland, the President and CEO of the Dodge Brand, called the 2013 Dodge Charger a “modern day muscle car” and praised the car’s powerful core and its “one-of-a-kind interior.”

The 2013 Dodge Charger Daytona will be a limited-production run with only 2,500 units available, and it will go on sale in the beginning of 2013. The Charger will be available in Charger R/T starting from $32,990 and Charger R/T Road & Track starting from $36,495. Most importantly, the Dodge Charger Daytona comes with that signature Charger power with a 370 horsepower HEMI V-8.

Looking through the promo pictures that Dodge released this week, it looks like Dodge has beautifully combined the classic muscle car with a comfortable and modern-looking interior. Interior shots also show off the 8.4-inch Uconnect Touch screen which comes with Bing search, GPS, and hands-free calls and texting.

How Will May Auto Sales Stack Up?

Every month seems to have the obligatory article about how well the auto industry is doing. There have been months of happy reporting about sales increases here and demands increasing there. It is a success story that is an easy topic. The question has always been, though, at the back of my mind how long that luck will hold out. I’ve wondered what the industry was doing to make sure that this increase in sales is the new standard and not just a moment in time. May could be the month that puts all of this progress to the test.

Auto Finance News posted an interesting read that posed that very question. The month of May was a bad month for the economy. The jobs reports that come out were dismal with only 69,000 jobs added, making it the weakest monthly growth in a year. It was bad enough that the report raised the unemployment rate up to 8.2 percent from 8.1 percent, but additionally, the confidence of the US consumer fell from 68.7 percent in April to 64.9 percent in May.

The question remains if this is going to have an impact on the upward swing of the auto industry. May is a notorious month for strong sales, so this might just be pessimistic thinking. I like to think that the industry is doing a good job of riding the wave, especially with many of them such as Chrysler making sure to keep people engage by bringing out new products like the Dodge Dart. Edmunds also made the prediction that car sales in the month of May would increase by 30 percent due in part to light vehicles continuing to sell well. Only time will tell if the rough economic reporting this last month is going to make a dent in the comeback story of the auto industry.
