Automakers Turn Pranksters for April Fool’s Day

Monday was April Fool’s Day, and this year, a number of automakers pulled off some pretty hilarious pranks. In case you missed them, here’s a rundown of some of the best pranks this year.

First up, BMW decided to take on the celebrity baby craze by announcing the new BMW PRAM (Postnatal Royal Auto Mobile), designed specifically for Prince William and Kate Middleton’s baby. While the baby isn’t due until summer 2013, BMW thought they would get a jump on their competitors and build a stroller fit for royalty, complete with a paparazzi-proof hood and air conditioning.

Next, Mini announced they would be branching out into matchmaker services. Mini drivers can create a profile on their in-car app Connect Us, and the app will match them with another Mini driver according to shared interests, driving style, and frequently visited locations. The in-car GPS will even suggest great date spots nearby so they can meet up right away.

Finally, my personal favorite of the day was Chevrolet’s idea for Corvette enthusiasts with a growing family. Instead of trading in the beloved Corvette for a sensible family car, drivers can now pick up an AeroWagonette for more seating space. The AeroWagonette is a trailer that hooks onto the back of Corvettes and comfortably seats 3 children. Its slick design also matches the look of the Corvette, so drivers won’t have to sacrifice style with their family car.

Detroit Auto Show: Hyundai Reveals Motion Sensor Technology

Distracted driving is a huge problem in this country. A driving distraction used to be squirming kids fighting over a Game Boy in the backseat, and now drivers have to block out smart phones, music, and even some of the technology built into the car like GPS and internet access. Every car company has an idea about how to curb distracted driving from hands-free calling to Ford’s driver stress test, and at the Detroit Auto Show, Hyundai unveiled their latest idea to keep drivers’ eyes on the road.

Motion sensor technology has come a long way in the past few years particularly with the Xbox Kinect. Hyundai is integrating motion sensor technology into its connected car technology. Other automakers have used touch screens, but this is the first time I have heard of a car company using motion sensor technology in this way. Unlike most connected systems, the screen is intentionally turned away from the driver and towards the passenger side, and it is meant to be controlled by the passenger, not the driver.

At the Detroit Auto Show, Hyundai showed off how to use the motion sensor technology to access apps, music, and other features. The demonstration also included playing a game of poker.

You can watch the video of Hyundai’s demonstration below.

While it certainly has a cool factor, I’m not convinced that Hyundai’s new system will do much to curb distracted driving. Besides that, the driver doesn’t have any way to check their car’s GPS since the screen is tilted towards the passenger side. I could see more cars integrating motion sensor technology, but otherwise I think Hyundai still has some kinks to work out.

Readers, what do you think? Do you want motion sensor technology in your car, or do you think these systems do more to cause distracted driving than deter it? Leave a comment below, and let us know what you think!

Ford SYNC Reaches Major Milestone

In the past few years, cars have become more connected at a startling rate. New cars are expected to have voice-recognition, provide GPS navigation, and have entertainment systems that work with the driver’s smartphone or iPod.

One of the first popular car connectivity systems hit a major milestone this week when Ford sold the five-millionth car equipped with the Ford SYNC, a system they developed with Microsoft. The SYNC was first introduced back in 2007. Currently the SYNC system includes GPS navigation, 911 emergency assistance, internet connection, hands-free calling with audible text messages, and an entertainment center complete with eight-inch color touch screen, Bluetooth audio streaming, Audible, and HD Radio.

In a press release from Ford, Vice President of Ford Research and Innovation Paul Mascarenas praised the SYNC, stating, “SYNC has helped us evolve as an automaker, to think and act more like a technology company, with a new level of openness and access that has forever changed how we look at our business and respond to our customers. Ultimately, SYNC embodies what Ford is all about: going further to transform innovative ideas into products that are affordable, attainable, and valuable to millions of people.” He went on to praise Microsoft for their work on the SYNC, citing the system’s ability to upgrade with software updates as the primary reason for its success.

Congratulations to Ford and Microsoft on the success of the SYNC! We at the Approved Loan Store are excited to see what the future holds for car connectivity and “smart cars,” and we appreciate the role that Ford played in paving that future.
