2014 Chevy Impala Receives NHTSA 5-Star Safety Rating, Top Marks from Consumer Reports

2014 Chevrolet ImpalaCar shoppers who consider safety their top priority have another great new option among the 2014 models.

Late last week, the 2014 Chevrolet Impala received a five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s New Car Assessment Program. The vehicle also has the distinction of being the first American sedan in two decades to receive the top score from Consumer Reports.

How did the Impala earn such a high rating from the NHTSA? Chevrolet packed the Impala with the latest safety features including traffic-sensing radar, adaptive cruise control, crash-imminent braking, lane departure warning, and more. Additionally, OnStar will send out a call to emergency services if the vehicle is in an accident, and the rear-view camera prevents collisions when parallel parking.

Best of all, the Impala is a bargain compared to its competitors. The starting price is $26,725, and standard features include 10 air bags for the vehicle, SiriusXM and HD Radio audio system, 4.2” diagonal color infotainment display, and seat adjuster for the driver and front passenger.

Chevy Malibu Updates Improve Fuel Efficiency, Add Legroom

1370269641512The 2014 Chevy Malibu won’t go on sale until this fall, but GM is already releasing details about what car buyers can expect from the updated Malibu.

The 2013 Chevy Malibu had a fuel efficiency rate of 22 mpg city driving and 34 mpg for highway driving, but GM expects the 2014 Malibu to improve on those numbers. While the engine will still be the standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, it will come equipped with a new intake valve technology and stop-start technology, giving the Malibu a 23 mpg for city and 35 mpg for highway driving.

Additionally, the new Malibu will have more legroom for the backseat passengers, a redesigned center console with a longer armrest, and the option for Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Pricing will not be announced until later this year, but the 2013 Chevy Malibu had a starting price of $21,995.

Electric Vehicles Outsell Plug-In Hybrids in March

March was a fantastic month for car sales in the U.S., but more notably, it was the best month for electric vehicles ever recorded.

Last month, there were 4,553 battery electric vehicles sold, outselling electric hybrids for the first time ever. There were 3,079 electric hybrid vehicles sold that month and an additional 46,327 hybrid units, bringing the total of electric and hybrid vehicles to 53,959 units.

By comparison, there were 2,616 battery electric vehicles sold in February and 2,022 vehicles sold in January. According to EV World News, the Nissan Leaf did quite well in March selling 2,236 units, and they outsold the Chevy Volt which sold 1,478 units in March. Nissan and Chevy both dropped their prices on the Leaf and Volt considerably last year after sales for both models were lagging, and March might be a sign of those discounts really paying off.

2014 Chevy Camaro Will Debut at New York Auto Show

Chevrolet Camaro Hot Wheels Concept

The New York Auto Show is coming up at the end of the month, and all the major automakers are starting to drop hints and leak pictures of the vehicles that will be making their debuts. Pictures of the new 2014 Chevy Camaro have already hit the web, but now Chevrolet has announced that the public will get a full look at the new Camaro at the New York Auto Show.

In a press release, Chevrolet promised that the 2014 Camaro “advances the design and performance attributes that have made it the most popular sports car under $50,000 for three consecutive years.” While the leaked pictures don’t show off the interior, the new Camaro has some changes to the exterior look, and it is rumored that the new model might be coming with a LS7 engine.

The official opening day for the New York Auto Show is March 30th, but there will be a press preview March 27th and 28th and a public sneak preview on the 29th. If you are in the New York City area, stop by the show at the Jacob Javits Convention Center on 11th Avenue between 34th and 40th Streets.

Chevrolet Donates Hundreds of Vehicles For First Responders Training

Hundreds of thousands of vehicles were destroyed in Super Storm Sandy back in October including a substantial amount of new inventory. A question that people are starting to ask is what automakers will do with all these cars, seeing as they are unfit to sell, and Chevrolet is stepping up to make the best out of a bad situation.

Chevrolet announced this week that they will be donating 300 vehicles to Guardian Centers in Perry, Ga. The cars will be used to train first responders in a modern cityscape simulator. Chris Perry, the U.S. Vice President of Chevrolet Marketing, explained that many ports and dealer lots in the northeast were flooded, and if Chevrolet hadn’t donated the vehicles, they would have been destroyed. “We could not sell them, so instead of crushing them, Chevrolet is using these vehicles to help train those who respond to just such disasters.”

Guardian Centers’ founder and CEO Geoff Burkart has called these vehicles “essential” to the simulation experience. In a joint press release, Burkart thanked Chevrolet for their contribution, stating, “Chevrolet has given the millions of first responders throughout North America the ability to exercise in metropolitan scenarios that will look and feel just like their home cities…You can’t expect first response professionals to conduct realistic training in a sterile environment. Every metropolitan area in the world must deal with vehicle traffic and first responders should be provided a training environment that helps condition them for what they will face on the job.”

Consumer Reports: Top 10 Cars We Would Buy Again

Repeat business and brand loyalty is extremely important in any industry, but it is especially important in the auto industry. Bad customer feedback can sink a model and cost an automaker greatly. Fortunately, there are plenty of vehicles on the market today that have repeat business, and Consumer Reports has compiled the top 10 cars that have customers coming back for more.

According to Consumer Reports, consumers said they would be most likely to buy the following cars again:

10/9. Toyota Camry hybrid and Ford Mustang V-8 (87 percent)
8/7. Dodge Charger V-8 and Audi A-6 (88 percent)
6. Lexus GS (89 percent)
5/4. Dodge Challenger V-8 and Audi A7 (90 percent)
3/2. Porsche 911 and Chevrolet Corvette (91 percent)
1. Chevrolet Volt (92 percent)

With only a 5 point range between tenth and first place, competition was tough this year. There was a tie for ninth, seventh, fourth, and second places. All of these automakers should be proud of these numbers, especially that the top 5 were at 90 percent or above. These are customer satisfaction stats that every company dreams of and rarely achieve, so consumers that are in the market for a new car should consider taking at least one of these 10 vehicles for a test drive.
