GM Announces World’s Most Efficient Car, Only Available in California and Oregon

2014 Chevrolet Spark EVThis week, there is some really good news and some bad news from General Motors.

We will give you the good news first. The new 2014 Chevrolet Spark EV has been getting some very positive press from The Car Connection as well as Auto Blog and Car and Driver. Critics are praising the Spark’s powerful motor, smooth ride, and affordable price with all the tax breaks available.

Now, the bad news is that the new Spark is only available in California and Oregon. It is not clear if or when the 2014 Chevrolet Spark EV will be available throughout the rest of the country, but if there is enough demand across the country, GM might be convinced to expand to the rest of the United States. Personally, I love the thought of never having to pay for gasoline ever again, and considering the reviews, I would like to take the Spark for a drive myself.

Nissan Leaf Quadruples Sales, Inventory Running Low

Nissan LeafJuly is almost over, and with 2013 more than halfway done, it is becoming clearer that this is the year for the Nissan Leaf.

Back in March, Nissan broke sales records selling over 1,900 units that month, and for the past few months, Nissan has sold more than 2,000 units each month. The popularity of the Leaf can be attributed to the recovering economy as well as tax credits up to $7,500 and other incentives, though it seems like Nissan was even surprised that the Leaf is selling four-times its numbers from 2012.

The one downside to the Leaf’s sudden popularity is that Nissan might not have enough inventory to keep up with demand. Erik Gottfried, Nissan’s director of electric vehicle sales and marketing, recently admitted that Nissan would be running short on their Leaf inventory, stating, “It will be late fall before we can produce enough to satisfy everybody.” Car shoppers who want to pick up the Nissan Leaf before the end of the summer will want to get into a dealership as soon as possible. Otherwise, they might have to wait until this fall for Nissan to replenish their inventory.

Readers, we want to hear from you! Have you taken the Nissan Leaf for a test drive yet? With its rising popularity and the tax credits, are you more likely to research and possibly purchase it? Leave a comment below, and let us know what you think!

Ford Announces New, Improved Regenerative Brakes

Ford Regenerative BrakesSince regenerative braking systems were introduced in the 1990s, automakers have been working to improve efficiency and transfer more braking energy back into the vehicle. Now, Ford is claiming that their new regenerative brakes can recapture twice or three-times the kinetic energy of their competitors.

A normal braking system utilizes friction between the brake pads and brake rotors, and the friction turns the kinetic energy into heat. In comparison, regenerative brakes reverse the vehicle’s electric motor, and the energy that is produced goes back into the vehicle’s battery. In the past, these brakes could recapture about 30 to 50 percent of the kinetic energy, but Dave Crombez, a technical expert at Ford, claims that Ford’s latest regenerative brakes can recapture up to 95 percent of that energy.

If the brakes can live up to these claims, Ford drivers will see a huge improvement in their vehicle’s fuel efficiency. Ford is predicting as much as 30 percent improvement, though once again it might not live up to those numbers in practice. When regenerative brakes are combined with lighter vehicle bodies, better engines, and other updates, however, they will create a much more fuel efficient vehicle together.

In Five Months, Ford Breaks Yearly Hybrid Sales Record

Ford LogoMay is barely over, and Ford has announced that they have already sold more hybrid vehicles in the first five months of 2013 than in the entirety of 2010, its previous full-year record.

So far in 2013, Ford has sold 37,000 hybrid vehicles including the Ford C-MAX Hybrid, Ford C-MAX Energi, Ford Fusion Hybrid, Ford Fusion Energi, and Lincoln MKZ. Even more exciting, sales numbers are up 375 percent compared to the first five months of 2012.

For years, the Toyota Prius has been the hybrid to beat, and there is no denying that it is still the big dog in hybrid vehicles. In California, the Prius beat out all other vehicles in the first quarter of the year, including its gasoline and diesel-powered competitors. It is vital, however, that there is some competition in the hybrid market. Automakers like Toyota will be forced to work harder and deliver a better product, and car buyers will have more great cars to choose from. Ultimately, consumers will win.

2013 Ford Fusion, Hybrid, and Energi Earn Five-Star Safety Ratings

2013 Ford FusionLast week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced that the 2013 Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid would receive a five-star safety rating, making it the third version of the 2013 Ford Fusion to receive a five-star rating.

Previously, the gasoline 2013 Ford Fusion and the Ford Fusion Hybrid had both received five-star ratings from the NHTSA. Broken down, each vehicle was rated up to five stars in frontal, side-impact, and rollover crash tests. The gasoline Fusion and Fusion Hybrid received five stars in the frontal test, four stars in the side-impact test, and four stars in the rollover crash test. Comparatively, the Energi earned scores of five stars in the frontal test, five stars in the side-impact test, and four stars in the rollover crash tests.

As if all of these honors weren’t enough, the gasoline Ford Fusion won The Car Connection’s Best Car to Buy 2013 award earlier this month, and the Fusion has also been named a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Additionally, the Fusion Hybrid also won Green Car of the Year at the L.A. Auto Show and Autobytel’s 2013 Car of the Year.

Tesla Announces Loan Repayment, Receives Rave Reviews

Telsa MotorsDepending on which news media outlet you listen to, Tesla Motors is either an epic failure waiting to happen or a smashing success. This week, however, Tesla’s detractors will have to eat their words as the divisive auto maker will be repaying their Department of Energy loans as early as today.

The loans weren’t scheduled to be paid off for another nine years, but Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced via Twitter on Monday that, “Given govt loan repayment this week (prob Wed), Supercharger update will be next week. Work continuing independent of announcement.” With the loan being paid off early, it is estimated that taxpayers will see a $12 million profit from the loan.

May has been a good month for Tesla. They earned $562 million in their first quarter, $70 million more than the revenue estimates, and it was their first profitable quarter. Besides their financial success this quarter, Consumer Reports gave the Tesla Model S a score of 99 out of 100, the highest score any car has ever received from Consumer Reports.

The Tesla still has some hurdles to overcome including a price that is still a bit higher than some car buyers are willing to pay. Also, charging stations are still not prevalent across the country. Still, this is a big step forward for Tesla and for electric cars in general.

Earth Day: Nissan, New York City Launch Plan for “Taxi of Tomorrow”

April 22 is Earth Day, and to celebrate, New York City is teaming up with Nissan to put the Taxi of Tomorrow on our city’s streets.

Nissan has donated six Nissan Leafs to the city of New York as part of the city’s plan to transition all taxis to electric vehicles. Over the next few years, they will test out the Nissan Leafs, pinpoint any needed adjustments, and find the best way to transition one-third of the fleet to electric vehicles by the end of the decade.

Nissan executive Joe Castelli was optimistic about the future of the program, stating, “Following the selection of Nissan NV200 as New York City’s Taxi of Tomorrow, our relationship with the city provides us the ultimate proving ground to conduct this Leaf taxi pilot to help optimize the use of electric vehicle technology for future application.”

Chevrolet Spark Upgrades With New DC Chargers

Ever since electric cars hit the market, they have had a tough time taking off. At first, it was the price hindering sales, but recent discounts and tax incentives have made them more affordable. When they became affordable, people started questioning their safety, and rumors still persist that electric cars are significantly more dangerous than gas-driven cars despite automakers’ steps to make them safer. Yet another real problem plagues the electric car, however, and that is how long it takes an electric car to charge.

Right now, alternating current (AC) energy has to be converted to direct current (DC) before the energy can be stored in car batteries. The conversion process slows down battery charging, and it takes longer to charge up electric cars. If a car could power up with a DC charger, it would speed up the charging process.

With that in mind, General Motors announced this week that the new Chevrolet Spark will have the standard AC port as well as two DC ports. Since DC chargers are not as readily available, a number of companies are stepping up to make them more available, though Eaton and Fuji Electric do have DC chargers available on the market at this time.

Readers, we want to hear from you! Does GM’s announcement make you more likely to test-drive the Spark? Would a faster charging time make you consider checking out other electric cars? Leave a comment below, and let us know what you think!

Electric Vehicles Outsell Plug-In Hybrids in March

March was a fantastic month for car sales in the U.S., but more notably, it was the best month for electric vehicles ever recorded.

Last month, there were 4,553 battery electric vehicles sold, outselling electric hybrids for the first time ever. There were 3,079 electric hybrid vehicles sold that month and an additional 46,327 hybrid units, bringing the total of electric and hybrid vehicles to 53,959 units.

By comparison, there were 2,616 battery electric vehicles sold in February and 2,022 vehicles sold in January. According to EV World News, the Nissan Leaf did quite well in March selling 2,236 units, and they outsold the Chevy Volt which sold 1,478 units in March. Nissan and Chevy both dropped their prices on the Leaf and Volt considerably last year after sales for both models were lagging, and March might be a sign of those discounts really paying off.

March Record Month for Nissan Leaf

If sales trends continue, March might be the best month ever for the Nissan Leaf.

The Nissan Leaf has struggled since its initial release to pull in big sales numbers, mostly due to its price, but Nissan has rolled out a number of discounts and incentives over the past year. Back in October, Nissan dropped the price for the Leaf, and drivers whose cars were destroyed by Hurricane Sandy were able to purchase the Leaf as well as other Nissan models using the typical employee discount. President Obama has also rolled out tax credits on qualifying hybrid, natural gas, and electric cars which includes the Nissan Leaf.

Across the board, electric cars saw a boost in November thanks to these discounts, but now the Nissan Leaf is looking to have its best sales month ever, selling more than 1,900 units in March. While Nissan leadership is pleased with the numbers, though, they are already pushing ahead. Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn was quoted, “Our ambition on the Leaf is not 2,000 a month. The target is much bigger than that. But we will have to be patient and resilient.”

Readers, we want to hear from you! What do you think of the Nissan Leaf? Have Nissan’s incentives and discounts made you consider taking the Leaf for a test drive? Leave a comment below, and let us know what you think!
