Cadillac CTS Named Motor Trend’s Car of the Year

2014-cts-sedan-gallery-exterior-front-960x400It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and for Cadillac, the reasons for celebration go beyond turkey and presents.

Last week, Motor Trend announced that the Cadillac CTS had beat out the Mazda3 and Chevrolet Corvette Stingray to win the Car of the Year award. The official announcement was made on Fox and Friends, Fox News’ morning show. The Cadillac CTS, which Motor Trend dubbed “a car for all seasons,” has been exceedingly well-reviewed. Jalopnik called it GM’s best sedan ever, and it earned top reviews from Car and Driver, Kelley Blue Book, and Auto Guide.

Standard features on the Cadillac CTS 2.0L Standard include a 5.7” color display, Bose 11-speaker premium audio system, Ultrasonic Rear Park Assist, remote start, StabiliTrak, and OnStar services including emergency services and hands-free calling. Additionally, the CTS 2.0L Standard gets an estimated fuel economy of 20 mpg city in RWD, 19 mpg city in AWD, 30 mpg highway in RWD, and 28 mpg highway in AWD.

2014 Lexus IS Surprises Detroit Auto Show with Luxury, “Bold” Design

The North American International Auto Show, better known as the Detroit Auto Show, is happening this week, and a few of the newly unveiled models are already trying to break from the pack and fighting to be the stand-out of the show. Among these competitors is the 2014 Lexus IS, and surprising to some critics, it is impressing show goers with a mix of luxury and sporty.

Many critics didn’t go into the Detroit Auto Show expecting to be impressed by Lexus. Jalopnik writer Raphael Orlove opened his review with, “I am a Lexus hater,” and he characterizes Lexus as being “willfully bland, inoffensive and characterless.” Autoblog’s Chris Paukert wrote about Lexus’ struggle to remove “some of the starch from its collar,” and all around, critics were generally skeptical that Lexus would bring anything radically different with the new IS.

Despite their predictions, though, all of them have had to eat their words. When head engineer Junichi Furuyama asked, “So, is it fun to drive?” Motor Trend’s Nate Martinez didn’t even have to pause before answering, “Most definitely.” By far, the funniest mea culpa was Jalopnik’s headline “I Kissed A 2014 Lexus IS And I Liked It.”

Check out the Lexus’ grand entrance to the Detroit Auto Show below:

Readers, what do you think? Will the 2014 Lexus IS change the way that people view the Lexus? Do you think this radical departure will pay off? Leave a comment below, and let us know what you think!

Young Car Enthusiast and “Connor’s Day” Namesake Passes Away

One of our favorite news stories of last year was the story of Connor Harrison, an 11-year-old British car enthusiast. Connor was terminally ill due to an inoperable brain tumor, and his father was worried that Connor would not live long enough to go to a car gathering, something Connor had wanted to do for quite some time. Instead of giving up, though, Connor’s father posted his story on the car forum ScoobyNet with the idea that he could organize a car gathering of his own in Yorkshire. The story went viral within the car enthusiast community, and thousands of people pledged to attend “Connor’s Day.”

Sadly, Jalopnik is reporting today that Connor passed away just before Christmas. His funeral service was on Christmas Eve.

Connor’s story is a tragedy. He was only 12 years old when he passed away, and it seems unfair that a young boy who loved cars did not live long enough to get the chance to have a first car. At the same time, this was one of our favorite stories of last year because it was a perfect example of the camaraderie in the car enthusiast community. It showed what human beings will do for a total stranger and his family, and we can only hope that 2013 will bring more random acts of kindness in the news cycle.

CONSUMER ALERT: Counterfeit Air Bags

This morning, the NHTSA released a safety advisory to consumers regarding counterfeit air bags that were installed at repair shops not associated with a new car dealership. At Approved Loan Store, we want to keep our readers informed of any and all consumer alerts from organizations that could affect their driving safety, so we wanted to break down the advisory and give you strictly the information that you need to know.

First off, this is potentially only going to affect less than 0.1 percent of vehicles, but since they don’t have all the pertinent data, it could be more than that. Any consumer who bought their car new and never had their air bags replaced is not affected by this advisory, and consumers who had their car’s air bag installed at a repair shop associated with a new car dealership are also not affected.

If the following qualifications apply to you, then you should contact a local call center and get your car checked out at a new car dealership’s repair shop. You can get the number for your local call center at www.SaferCar.gov.

  • Replaced vehicle’s air bags within the past three years at a repair shop not associated with a new car dealership
  • Purchased a used car and are unsure of the car’s full history
  • Purchased a car with a title branded salvage, rebuilt, or reconstructed
  • Purchased a replacement air bag from a non-certified source such as eBay

If you believe that your car might be affected, take care of it right away. The NHTSA has released a frightening video of what happens when these counterfeit air bags are deployed. Jalopnik is hosting the video here. This is not something to put off for a few days or a few weeks. If your car fits any of the categories listed above, get it checked out as soon as possible.

George Romney and the “Gas-Guzzling Dinosaur”

Election year is in full swing, and with a little less than 2 months until the election, it is hard to go anywhere without hearing nasty attacks and soapbox speeches. Since our site covers auto news and tips for car shopping, we don’t usually have the need to go anywhere near politics, but after reading this fascinating little piece over on Jalopnik about George Romney and the auto industry, we thought it was worth a share. You can read the full article here or check out our recap and thoughts on the piece below.

When you think of compact cars and better fuel economy, what names come to mind? George W. Mason, Alec Issigonis, or Henry J. Kaiser are obvious choices, but many young car enthusiasts today don’t know that George Romney was instrumental in making compact cars mainstream. Some people might be surprised that George Romney, the late father of presidential candidate Mitt Romney, wanted to make cars more fuel efficient, calling current models “gas guzzling dinosaurs.” He worried that families were overly burdened by the cost of gasoline, and despite criticism and disdain for compact cars at the time, Romney used his influence to encourage the movement towards smaller vehicles.

While he was president of American Motors Corporation, he wrote an editorial in the News and Courier in South Carolina that shows his enthusiasm for the future of compact cars, specifically the Rambler. He saw the potential of the compact car, and in his editorial, he writes, “Just what is a true ‘compact’ car? Loosely applied, the term has been used to describe a car providing better-than-average gasoline economy, or a particular size of vehicle, or a car in the new lower price range. The compact car concept is broader than these things.” The full editorial is available here.

While Mitt Romney shouldn’t be judged positively or negatively by the actions of his father, I thought that more people should know that George Romney was a pioneer in fuel-efficient vehicles. His actions showed empathy for the American family trying to stick to a budget and also started the slow move away from gas-guzzling cars. I don’t know if his son Mitt has the same enthusiasm for getting “gas guzzling dinosaurs” off the road, but it could make for a very interesting debate question for the decidedly pro-business candidate.

Free Wedding with Oil Change? Dealership Wedding Makes Headlines

In Wichita, a young couple walked into a car dealership and left with a truck, a car, and a wedding.

Jada Miller and Shane Starlin weren’t even planning to get married when they walked into the Suzuki of Wichita. They were looking for a truck and a Suzuki Kizashi, and as they were shopping, their salesman Randolph Warren commented on the lack of wedding rings. Jada bluntly replied that they weren’t married because Shane hadn’t asked her. After some playful joking around, Shane said he didn’t know a minister, and Randolph volunteered that he was an ordained minister and could perform the ceremony at the dealership. Jada and Shane didn’t immediately take him up on the offer, but when they returned to get a tire replaced, they took Randolph up on his offer.

The dealership transformed the showroom into a wedding chapel with a flowery wedding arch and a white walkway. The wedding music was “Bless the Broken Road” by Rascal Flatts and songs by the a cappella group Intensity. The dealership even arranged for the cake, a baby-blue and white cake with wedding ring cake toppers. While it was unconventional, there was a genuine sweetness to the whole event.

Jada and Shane’s story has been covered by the Wichita Eagle and Jalopnik among other news sites, and the wedding highlights video is available on YouTube. I think what draws people to the story is the spontaneity of it. Wedding culture has turned into a monster of satin and lace that seemingly feeds on piles of money. For many people, weddings are stressful affairs that lose the celebration of love in the midst of family politics and fighting over the budget. Jada and Shane’s wedding was simple, fun, and low-maintenance while still being memorable for everyone involved.

While Approved Loan Store hasn’t hosted any weddings yet, we continue to do what we do best: get customers into cars. Protect Your Investment and Clean Your Car

At Approved Loan Store, we want to help you get into a great new or used vehicle, and through our blog, we like giving tips for keeping that car in top shape. Our customers, especially our New York customers, spend so much time in their car that a dirty car can get gross very quickly. Besides that, a car is an important investment, and after getting a nice new car, why wouldn’t you want to take care of it?

Today, we are bringing you some fantastic tips for keeping your car clean, courtesy of Jalopnik. We hope that our readers heed this advice for their own sake as well as their passengers because everyone knows that there is almost nothing worse than riding in a dirty car.

No Food: Stopping by that drive through and chowing down a burger in the car might sound appealing at the time, but those ketchup stains and discarded wrappers are definitely not.

Wax On, Wax Off: Waxing your car teaches you karate. Okay, maybe it won’t, but this is part of that whole “a car is an investment” mentality. You spent a good amount of money on this car, and with a little more time and money, you can keep the car looking nicer longer.

Wipe Your Feet: During bad winter weather, I’m tempted to jump in the car right away and dry off or get the heater running. Since I saw how much snow and mud I end up tracking in, though, I started taking a minute to wipe off my shoes or boots before getting into the car. It might mean an extra minute in the cold, but it is worth not having to scrub off that dried mud later.

Don’t Procrastinate: You might follow these rules 99 percent of the time, but when you break them that one time and get Dr. Pepper all over your seat, you don’t want to leave it to clean up tomorrow. Those stains set fast and will be much harder to get out later.

Use the Garage: Many people don’t have this option available, especially those living or working in the city. If you have a garage, however, take advantage of it. It will keep the exterior clean for much longer, not to mention cut down on the time spent scrubbing off bird poop.

Don’t Leave a Dirty Car: When you get out of your car, take a minute to look around and pick up whatever trash you can take with you. A McDonald’s bag, an empty water bottle, and a can of soda can easily be picked up and thrown out. This way, you can avoid a massive overhaul cleaning later.

Prioritize a Car Wash: Just like exercising or doing any chore, you will be more likely to get to it if you schedule time for it. Plus, if you stick to a schedule, you will always know when you last washed it.

Do It Once and Do It Right: It is easier to maintain a clean car than digging yourself out every couple of months. Take a day to thoroughly vacuum the interior, throw out any trash, and wash and wax the outside. You will still have to do a good cleaning periodically, but it won’t be so daunting if you maintain it in the interim.

No Kids Allowed: Now, I don’t agree with this tip from Jalopnik, mainly because it is unrealistic for most people. Still, you can keep your car cleaner if you follow these tips and get your kids to follow them too. No graham crackers in the back seat, and you can even get older kids involved in cleaning and waxing the car.

Good Driving Made Simple (And Hilarious!)

From the time teenagers turn 14 and apply for their learner’s permit, they are bombarded with driving advice. Turn down the music, pay attention to the road, always wear your seat-belt, and so on and so forth. According to a web comic that is making the rounds online, though, driving is not as complicated as it sounds.

Jalopnik was one of the first news sites to post up the comic/flow chart which is seen below. It seems that driving properly all comes down to one factor, using the passing lane in the correct fashion.

As a frequent driver, I got a kick out of the comic. Yes, driving properly is really more involved than this flow-chart would suggest, but if people used the passing lane correctly, it would go a long ways in improving the roads. I think everyone at some point has experienced the frustration of another driver using the passing lane but not actually passing anyone, so on behalf of all the drivers using the lane properly, we ask that everyone else read this chart and follow it, please. It’s not too much to ask.

One-Half Boat, One-Half Sports Car, 100 Percent Awesome

Stevie Johnson owns what I’m sure will be the most envied powerboat ever. It might seem strange to be discussing a boat on a car blog, but this particular boat is different. This is a boat built for a car lover.

One half lobster boat, one half 1994 Pontiac Sunbird convertible, the water has never seen anything like Stevie Johnson’s unique creation. The cool blue Pontiac Sunbird is mounted to the top of the boat, and the vehicle is rigged up so that Stevie can drive the boat from the front seat of the car. While it is not the fastest boat in the Maine lobster boat races, Stevie’s boat dubbed the “Sunbird” is drawing crowds and admirers wherever he goes.

Stevie has a history of racing unconventional vehicles in Maine lobster boat races. He has taken on competitors in a seaplane, and back in 2009, he told the Wall Street Journal that he was looking into purchasing an Oscar Mayer Weinermobile. There is no word as to whether he successfully acquired that Weinermobile, but I can only imagine what kind of boat he planned to build out of it.

If you want to see more of the Sunbird, check it out over at Jalopnik, and keep up with the latest auto news and trends by liking Approved Loan Store on Facebook and following Approved Loan Store on Twitter.
