George Romney and the “Gas-Guzzling Dinosaur”

Election year is in full swing, and with a little less than 2 months until the election, it is hard to go anywhere without hearing nasty attacks and soapbox speeches. Since our site covers auto news and tips for car shopping, we don’t usually have the need to go anywhere near politics, but after reading this fascinating little piece over on Jalopnik about George Romney and the auto industry, we thought it was worth a share. You can read the full article here or check out our recap and thoughts on the piece below.

When you think of compact cars and better fuel economy, what names come to mind? George W. Mason, Alec Issigonis, or Henry J. Kaiser are obvious choices, but many young car enthusiasts today don’t know that George Romney was instrumental in making compact cars mainstream. Some people might be surprised that George Romney, the late father of presidential candidate Mitt Romney, wanted to make cars more fuel efficient, calling current models “gas guzzling dinosaurs.” He worried that families were overly burdened by the cost of gasoline, and despite criticism and disdain for compact cars at the time, Romney used his influence to encourage the movement towards smaller vehicles.

While he was president of American Motors Corporation, he wrote an editorial in the News and Courier in South Carolina that shows his enthusiasm for the future of compact cars, specifically the Rambler. He saw the potential of the compact car, and in his editorial, he writes, “Just what is a true ‘compact’ car? Loosely applied, the term has been used to describe a car providing better-than-average gasoline economy, or a particular size of vehicle, or a car in the new lower price range. The compact car concept is broader than these things.” The full editorial is available here.

While Mitt Romney shouldn’t be judged positively or negatively by the actions of his father, I thought that more people should know that George Romney was a pioneer in fuel-efficient vehicles. His actions showed empathy for the American family trying to stick to a budget and also started the slow move away from gas-guzzling cars. I don’t know if his son Mitt has the same enthusiasm for getting “gas guzzling dinosaurs” off the road, but it could make for a very interesting debate question for the decidedly pro-business candidate.

Are You Paying Too Much for Auto Insurance?

At Approved Loan Store, we want to make sure our customers get the best possible deal on an auto loan, but there are more costs to owning a car than just the loan payments. There is the cost of gas, general maintenance, and of course, insurance. We want to help our customers save on these other car costs, so when we saw these tips for lowering car insurance costs over at Fox Business, we wanted to share them with our readers. Please remember that discounts and terms of those discounts vary between insurance companies, so ask your insurance company if these discounts are applicable.

If You Are in a Committed Relationship…
Married couples and unmarried committed gay couples can often receive discounts, especially if they are insuring multiple vehicles.

If You Are a College Student…
Full-time students can receive a discount. Sometimes the discount is based on grade point average, but that isn’t always the case.

If You Installed a Car Alarm…
Many insurance companies will offer a discount for installing car alarms, fuel or ignition cutoff switches, vehicle identification number engravings, or car tracking systems.

If You Switched to Paperless…
So many insurance companies want to brag about going green, and they give incentives to customers for e-mail communication instead of paper mailings. Also, if you are thinking about switching to a hybrid, some car insurance companies are giving as much as a 10 percent discount.

If You Were in a Fraternity/Sorority…
Former frat brothers and sorority sisters can get up to an 8 percent discount. The reasoning is that individuals involved in these kinds of groups are more responsible and less likely to be reckless drivers.

If You Served Your Country…
Many companies want to ease the financial burden of those who have served in the armed forces, and car insurance companies are no exception. Some offer a 15 percent discount when the driver is home in the states and up to 80 percent when they are deployed.

If You Have Good Credit…
This is a tip we have mentioned before, but it bears repeating. By improving your credit, you can save money on so many things including car insurance.

If You Are a Teacher/Doctor/Police Officer/ Self-Employed…
There are numerous discounts based on profession, and it isn’t just for servicemembers. Again, check with your insurance company because the variety of professions included is shocking.

If You Are a Loyal Customer…
Have you been with your insurance company for 5 years? 10 years? If so, you might be eligible for a customer loyalty discount.

Are you taking advantage of all of these discounts? Did we miss any lesser-known discounts? Leave a comment below, and tell us what discounts you are taking advantage of with your insurance!

Mazda Puts Line-Up on Strict Diet

Fuel efficiency and alternative fuels are becoming more and more important to car manufacturers, and Mazda hopes to improve their line-up with a bold goal: putting their line-up on a strict diet.

Last week, Mazda announced a plan to cut a minimum of 220 pounds with every vehicle model redesign. This is not an easy task for the company’s engineers who have to fulfill certain safety requirements as well as keep customers happy with newer technology and more comfortable interiors. Still, Mazda is dedicate to the lofty goal, even as the cars will eventually run out of weight to cut. Vehicle development engineer Dave Coleman commented, “Obvious that’s going to get harder and harder. We focused so much on the low-hanging fruit that we still have a lot of room.”

How does a car company go about lightening a car’s load? New lightweight materials play a big role, and frame redesigns require less steel, automatically cutting back the car’s weight. Of course, the problem with some of these new materials is availability and price. While they might be cheaper in the long run with higher fuel efficiency, consumers might end up paying a little more now for these lighter cars.

What do you think about Mazda’s weight goals? Would you be more or less likely to buy a Mazda after they drop some pounds? Leave a comment below, and tell us what you think!

GM Announces Major Breakthrough in Electric Car Batteries

This might be only the second full week of August, but already it is the month of hybrid and electric cars. Earlier this week, we told you about new technology out of Middle Tennessee State University that will transform normal vehicles into fuel-efficient hybrid cars.  Yesterday, GM continued the trend by making a major announcement about the future of electric cars.

GM CEO Dan Akerson announced at an employee meeting Thursday that there has been a breakthrough in the lithium-ion batteries used in electric cars. Right now, the Chevrolet Volt can go for about 35 miles per electric charge with a gas motor that kicks in if the battery power runs out. Akerson announced that the new batteries would be able to travel 100 miles per charge, nearly three times its current power, and he teased that the batteries would soon be able to travel up to 200 miles per charge. He called the increased battery power a “game changer” in the industry.

Even with this great news, though, GM is still being cautious and keeping their business in mind while exploring hybrids and electric cars. If it turns out that they can’t make 200-mile batteries, they are also working on hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and natural gas vehicles. Akerson compared focusing solely on electric cars to putting “all of our chips on one bet” and assured GM employees and the public that GM would explore all of their options.

If GM came out with electric cars that could go 200 miles on one charge, would you take one for a test drive? Leave a comment below, and tell us what you think!

Tennessee Student Invention Changing the Future of Hybrid Cars

New green technology is becoming more of a necessity as every year goes by, and though hybrid cars are starting to become more popular, Americans have been slow to adapt to this new technology. A new invention out of the Middle Tennessee State University, though, promises hybrid car technology without having to buy a new car.

For five years, Dr. Charles Perry has been working with MTSU students to create an electric propulsion system that doubles a car’s fuel economy and can be installed for a reasonable price. He showed off a prototype of the system in a YouTube video which was posted to the MTSU YouTube channel a little less than two weeks ago. Already, they have four pending patents, and MTSU is exploring their options in commercializing this new technology.

Up until now, Americans as a whole have wanted better fuel economy, but at the same time, they have been wary of electric and hybrid cars. Maybe it was the price or technical bugs. Maybe they believed that buying a hybrid car would limit their options, or maybe they just hated the notion of trading in their powerful truck for an itty-bitty hybrid. Up until now, the idea has been to make whole new cars and make them appealing to the public, but with this new system from MTSU, drivers can have their car cake and eat it too. They can keep the car they love and upgrade its fuel economy for as little as $3,000.

It will probably be awhile yet until these systems are available for purchase, but if you are looking for a more fuel efficient vehicle now, Approved Loan Store wants to help! American Auto Makers Making Bank at Home

Recent numbers from the U.S. auto industry show that while sales are struggling internationally, auto sales here at home are still booming.

American auto buyers are spurred on by loosening auto loan requirements, increased quality in American-made cars, and a steadily improving economy. Also, new vehicles like the Dodge Dart are spurring excitement among car buyers, something that hasn’t been seen in recent years, and these new models are offering better fuel economy, even for their trucks and larger vehicles. LMC Automotive predicts that 14.5 million light vehicles will be sold in the United States this year alone, and 150 percent of Ford’s second quarter earnings came from U.S. auto sales.

Are these sales numbers sustainable? Probably not, but they are pretty amazing nonetheless. Even when the sales eventually plateau, I expect they will still pull in good numbers domestically. American auto makers have seen a comeback both in quality and sales, and car shoppers are much more likely to consider an American-made car now than they were just a few years ago. Plus, many drivers have held off on a new car for so long that their current ride is reaching the end of its road life, and soon it will make more sense to buy a new car instead of sinking more money into repairing the old one.

If you’re looking for a new or used car, now is the time to buy! Lenders are loosening their requirements, and Approved Loan Store wants to help you get the best deal possible on that new car! Compact Cars: Trading Down is Trading Up

A recent study released by J.D. Power and Associates had some interesting findings about car trade-ins and how people view a vehicle downsize as a trade up.

According to the study, more than a quarter of drivers trading in their car opted to go for a smaller vehicle while only 13 percent chose to go with a larger car. Compact cars aren’t only getting love from trade-in drivers, though. Across the board, more people are buying compact cars this summer.

Why is there such an interest in smaller cars? Well, compact cars today offer great features that at one time were only available in larger vehicles. Getting a compact car no longer means sacrificing comfort or new car technology. Cars like the Dodge Dart have digital dashboard displays, customizable interiors, and other high-demand add-ons like the wireless iPhone charger. To make the deal sweeter, compact cars tend to get better fuel economy than their larger counterparts, making it a greater value in the long run.

No matter what kind of car you are looking for, from compact cars to pick-up trucks, Approved Loan Store wants to help you! Auto Loans and the Road Back to Good Credit

For consumers looking to re-establish a strong credit history, auto loans are becoming the best choice, even for those with especially poor credit.

The qualifications for mortgages, business loans, and credit cards have held steady with strict income and credit requirements, and consumers whose credit took a hit during the economic downturn are having a tough time getting back in good graces with lenders. As many of these applicants have been turned down for credit cards or mortgages, though, many of them have been approved for car loans.

For many consumers with poor credit, a car loan is perfect. Car ownership has been show to correlate with job security and less reliance on public assistance, and it is a purchase that most consumers want and need. Besides that, their credit score will improve as they make their car payments on time, provided they keep up with their other payment obligations of course.

This is one of the reasons why Approved Loan Store exists and why we do what we do. We want to help more people get into the car they want and need. June’s Top Selling Cars: Trucks, Compact Leading the Pack

Anyone paying attention to car sales in 2012 knows that June was a spectacular month, continuing the upward trend set in the spring. Everyone is asking what is causing these high sales and renewed interest in getting back on the road. Personally, I think the best way to find out why people are buying new cars is to look at the type of cars they are buying. Below, we have listed the top 10 selling cars in June with #1 selling over 55,000 units and #10 selling slightly under 24,000.

  1. Ford F-Series pickups – 55,025 units
  2. Chevy Silverado – 33,566 units
  3. Toyota Camry – 32,107 units
  4. Chevy Malibu – 31,402 units
  5. Honda Accord – 28,924 units
  6. Ford Escape – 28,500 units
  7. Honda Civic – 27,500 units
  8. Toyota Corolla and Matrix – 26,647 units
  9. Ford Fusion – 24,433 units
  10. Ram pickups – 23,951 units

Some people are pointing to the Ford F-Series pickups and Chevy Silverado topping the list and saying that car buyers are looking for a fun summer car for camping or just getting outdoors for the day. Even though trucks took the top two spots, though, compact cars dominated the overall top ten list in June with those top compact cars selling 171,013 units. Only one SUV or crossover made the list which could be due to high gas prices, but considering that trucks are selling just fine, it might be that car buyers just aren’t looking at SUVs and crossover vehicles.

What do you think of the top 10 list? Are there any cars on the list that surprise you? Leave a comment below, and tell us what you think!

Carpooling Network Coming to the United States

At the Approved Loan Store, we know how long and boring the morning commute can be. If you’d like to qualify for the carpool lane, though, a German company wants to give you some company on the way into work.

Carpooling.com was founded by 3 German MBA students, and since its inception, it has spread to Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Spain, Poland, Greece, the United Kingdom, and now the United States. Approximately 1 million people use their services every month. The concept is simple. Riders can register through the website and look up drivers according to area, type of vehicle and seating accommodations, available time, and price. Carpooling.com also has a Facebook, iPhone, and Android app to make booking on the go easier. They also offer women-only rides, driver safety ratings, and an online ratings system to put the riders and drivers at ease.

There are a lot of advantages to carpooling. First, it saves on commuting costs with riders splitting the cost of gas, and there are obvious benefits for the environment. Also, carpooling matches up people who might otherwise never meet, and some drivers and riders have struck up life-long friendships after riding together. Their website also brags of more than 10 wedding of people who met through Carpooling.com.

The reason why Carpooling.com has taken so long to get to the United States is that people feel iffy about riding with someone they don’t know. Some people worry about safety, either that the driver will be reckless or that the driver or rider will be a dangerous individual. Fortunately, there are safeguards in place to protect riders and drivers, and it is certainly more safe than finding a carpool ride through other online avenues like Craigslist.

Readers, we want to hear from you! Would you consider being a driver for Carpooling.com or another carpool website? Would you ever use it to find a ride? Leave a comment below, and tell us what you think!
