Chevrolet Spark Upgrades With New DC Chargers

Ever since electric cars hit the market, they have had a tough time taking off. At first, it was the price hindering sales, but recent discounts and tax incentives have made them more affordable. When they became affordable, people started questioning their safety, and rumors still persist that electric cars are significantly more dangerous than gas-driven cars despite automakers’ steps to make them safer. Yet another real problem plagues the electric car, however, and that is how long it takes an electric car to charge.

Right now, alternating current (AC) energy has to be converted to direct current (DC) before the energy can be stored in car batteries. The conversion process slows down battery charging, and it takes longer to charge up electric cars. If a car could power up with a DC charger, it would speed up the charging process.

With that in mind, General Motors announced this week that the new Chevrolet Spark will have the standard AC port as well as two DC ports. Since DC chargers are not as readily available, a number of companies are stepping up to make them more available, though Eaton and Fuji Electric do have DC chargers available on the market at this time.

Readers, we want to hear from you! Does GM’s announcement make you more likely to test-drive the Spark? Would a faster charging time make you consider checking out other electric cars? Leave a comment below, and let us know what you think!

WardsAuto Announces 10 Best Interiors of 2013

Yesterday, WardsAuto announced the winners of their 10 Best Interiors of 2013, one of the year’s most highly anticipated awards, and surprisingly no single automaker walked away with a majority of the list.

Toyota Motor Corp and General Motors Co took home the most awards with 2 spots each, and the rest of the spots went to vehicles from Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, Nissan, and Chrysler.

In a press release from WardsAuto, WardsAuto World Editor-in-Chief Drew Winter spoke about the importance of a vehicle’s interior and how they are “vital” in winning over drivers’ “hearts and minds.”

“It wasn’t uncommon all that long ago for auto makers to view interiors as the best place to take cost out of a vehicle program,” explained Winter. “They eventually figured out that’s a big mistake because people spend a lot more time looking at the inside of their vehicle than outside.

The winners are as follows, in alphabetical order:

Acura RDX (Honda Motor Co. Ltd.)
Cadillac XTS (General Motors Co.)
Chevrolet Spark (General Motors Co.)
Hyundai Santa Fe Sport (Hyundai Motor Co. Ltd.)
Kia Forte (Kia Motors Corp.)
Lexus GS 450h (Toyota Motor Corp.)
Mazda6 (Mazda Motor Corp.)
Nissan Pathfinder (Nissan Motor Co. Ltd.)
Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn (Chrysler Group LLC)
Toyota Avalon (Toyota Motor Corp)

Winners will be honored at a ceremony during the WardsAuto Interiors Conference on May 22 in Dearborn, MI.

Readers, we want to hear from you! What do you think of the 2013 winners? Are you happy with the list, or did you notice any snubs? Leave a comment below, and let us know what you think!

WardsAuto Announces 10 Best Interiors in April

Next month, WardsAuto will be narrowing down 47 competing vehicle interiors to only 10 for the honor of being named one of Ward’s 10 Best Interiors of 2013.

The top 3 automakers represented this year were General Motors with nine nominees, Toyota with seven nominees, and Honda with five nominees. Notably, the Ram 1500 was the only pickup truck nominated this year after having no pickup truck nominees last year.

WardsAuto editors serve as judges narrowing down and selecting the final list, and they judge interiors based on a wide variety of factors from the quality of materials used to safety features and “smart” car features. It seems like more expensive vehicles would have an edge over their competitors, but editors are less interested in price than what the driver is getting for their money. If the vehicle is a good price with a superior interior, it will have a better chance of making the list than an expensive car that doesn’t live up to its price tag.

The list will be announced next month, and WardsAuto will present the awards at a ceremony on May 22 in Dearborn, MI as part of the WardsAuto Interiors Conference. Stay tuned to the Approved Loan Store blog for the full list when it is announced.

Chrysler Announces $374 Million Investment in Indiana Factories

At the end of January, GM announced that they would be investing $600 million into their Fairfax Assembly and Stamping Plant, their largest investment into a single plant to date. GM isn’t the only automaker putting funds back into their factories, though, as Chrysler announced late last week that they would be investing over $300 million into two of their factories.

The two factories, located in Indiana, will receive a total of $374 million in upgrades and approximately 1,250 new jobs. These factories were on the chopping block back in 2009 after Chrysler filed for bankruptcy, and it is fantastic that now in 2013, they are receiving such a major investment from Chrysler. Upgrades to the factories will address current safety risks and get them ready to produce 8-speed and 9-speed transmission.

In a press release, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne praised the Indiana workers, calling the investment a “tribute to the character of the men and women of Chrysler” and crediting Chrysler’s success with its workers’ “ability and…willingness to think in unconventional ways in order to exceed expectations.”

Bob Lutz Credits GM Engineers for Success, Slams Eric Whitacre’s New Book

Auto industry journalists got the chance to show their snarky streak this week in response to Ed Whitacre’s book, American Turnaround: Reinventing AT&T and GM and the Way We Do Business in the USA. To say that some people are skeptical of Whitacre’s grand claims is being charitable.

Perhaps the most notable (and entertaining) news piece was Bob Lutz’s Forbes piece “How Ed Whitacre Saved GM In Just 10 Months, And Other Fables.” For readers unfamiliar with Bob Lutz’s career, he has a long history with GM. He started his career with GM in 1963 working in sales and marketing positions. He left the company in December 1971 to work in senior management positions for BMW, Ford Motor Company, and Chrysler among others, and he eventually came back to GM in 2001. When he retired in 2010, he was the vice chairman of General Motors.

It is fair to say that Bob Lutz is a man who knows GM from top to bottom, and he has no tolerance for any one person taking all the credit for GM’s turnaround or using it to peddle a simplistic business strategy. In his Forbes op-ed, Lutz wrote, “Ed Whitacre, who served as GM’s chief for exactly ten months…spent much of his time wandering around uncovering employees who were insufficiently entrepreneurial, cautious, or didn’t have enough ‘can-do’ spirit…If you believe any of this, I need to talk to you about ocean front property in Nebraska.”

Thankfully, Lutz takes a break from zingers for a few paragraphs to recognize who he thinks should take credit for GM’s turnaround. He mentions the Obama administration and his “fix-it team” including Steve Rattner, Ron Bloom, and Harry Wilson, and he points out that the recovery couldn’t have happened without their work on the financial restructuring of GM. Even more commendable, Lutz gave credit to the engineers and designers behind the 2009 thru 2012 models, the people who created the products that saved GM. At this point, he delivers a line that really sums up his entire piece. “WE did every one of those winning products for which some 90-day wonders would now like to be retroactively credited.” Ed Whitacre certainly had some impact on GM’s recovery. It would be silly to deny it, but for him to claim the credit for GM’s turnaround without also mentioning these designers and engineers is dishonest and wrong.

Readers, we want to hear from you! Have you read Whitacre’s book? Do you plan on reading it, and do you agree with Bob Lutz’s assessment of GM’s turnaround? Leave a comment below, and let us know what you think!

CONSUMER ALERT: Recall on Certain 2012 GM Auto Models

A few days ago, GM and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced a recall of some 2012 GM vehicles over safety concerns with the vehicles’ air bags.

The affected vehicle models are the 2012 Buick Verano, the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro, the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze, and the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic. According to the recall report, there are issues with the driver side frontal air bag where the air bag might not deploy in a crash.

GM is replacing the steering wheel airbag coil free of charge for all affected vehicles, and while GM will be contacting all affected drivers, any owners who are feeling pro-active can contact GM at 1-800-521-7300.

CONSUMER ALERT: GM Recalls Trucks, Vans for Roll-Away Problem

Over the weekend, GM announced a recall of approximately 69,000 2013-model full-size trucks and vans including the Cadillac Escalade and Chevy Silverado.

According to General Motors, there has been a problem with these vehicles shifting out of park and rolling away. They believe the problem could be defective transmission interlocks, but GM has also said that the problem could be due to a fractured park-lock cable or a deformed steering –column lock-actuator gear.

Recalled vehicles include:

  • Cadillac Escalade
  • Chevrolet Avalanche
  • Chevrolet Express
  • Chevrolet Silverado
  • Chevrolet Suburban
  • Chevrolet Tahoe
  • GMC Savana
  • GMC Sierra
  • GMC Yukon

Fortunately, most of the vehicles affected by the recall are still on dealer lots since they are 2013 models, but any car owners affected by the recall will be contacted by GM about replacing the vehicle’s steering column for no charge. If you think your vehicle might be affected and have not heard from GM, you can call 1-800-630-2438 for Chevrolet vehicles, 1-866-982-2339 for Cadillacs, and 1-866-996-9463 for GMC vehicles.

LA Auto Show: Honda Announces New Civic Premiere

In 2 weeks, Honda will unveil the new Civic at the Los Angeles Auto Show, and early word that Honda listened to its fans and critics with the newest model of one of their most popular cars.

Almost 50 vehicles will debut during the show including world premieres from Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler, and Honda will be showing off several new vehicles including the Civic. Some members of the press, though, got an early look this week to stir up excitement for the official premiere at the show.

On the outside, the 2013 Civic will have an open-mouth lower bumper, a black mesh grille with integrated fog lights, and larger jewel-style tail lights, but reports are saying that it is what’s on the inside that counts with the new Civic. According to the Wall Street Journal, Honda has updated the interior, turned their focus to the driver’s comfort, and overall aimed to give it a feeling of luxury and youth.

Will the new Civic live up to the hype? We won’t know for another two weeks yet, but looking at the LA Auto Show line-up, it will have to bring its A-game to stand out from the pack. Then again, Honda has a history of excellence with awards from Edmunds, Kelley Blue Book, and Green Car Journal, not to mention About.com’s 2012 Best New Car award. They just might be up to the challenge.

Veteran’s Day: GM Military Discount Now More Inclusive

Last Sunday was Veteran’s Day, but even before Sunday, General Motors was honoring our veterans by announcing an expansion on their current military discount.

For years, GM has offered discounts on most Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC models for active duty, reservists, and retired service members and their spouses. Starting this weekend, however, the program will be expanded to veterans within a year after discharge. Linda Stouffer, who serves as GM’s marketing manager for vehicle service programs, explained that the expansion would help include more returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan and emphasized that the program is “just one way” that GM thanks America’s servicemen and women.

In addition to the military discount, GM supports Cell Phones for Soldiers, Achilles Freedom Team of Wounded Veterans, the Fallen and Wounded Soldiers Fund, and numerous other employment initiatives for returning soldiers. They are also sponsors of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Hiring Our Heroes initiative, a nationwide program that sponsors hundreds of hiring fairs every year.
